The Future Leaders Programme
(The FLP)

The FLP is a bespoke process in which we engage with the young graduating and recent graduates

and enable them to learn about the global and local trends of leadership.

And through interactive enter-educate tasks we inspire them to take lead in their future career.

The FLL with its organisational capacity initiated the Community Leadership Programme (CLP) in London in 2011 with SOAS University of London organised by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH), which now has become a mainstream Leadership programme in the UK funded by the European Commission (EC). Having successfully designed and delivered the CLP, The FLL has designed ‘The Future Leaders Programme (FLP)’ for Bangladesh in 2012-13. Back in 2011, The FLL realised that in Bangladesh there had been the absence of a nation-wide leadership development programme which could inspire the key & prospective segment of the economic force i.e. the youths particularly the graduating and recent graduates. Our extensive mapping exercise led us to design and position the FLP as follows-

The FLP is for the final year students and recent graduates from all the public and private universities of Bangladesh across all the disciplines of Business, Science & Technology and Social & Liberal Arts. It has 4 core outcomes:

  1. Raising awareness of the value of leadership amongst the youths

  2. Helping individuals to identify their skills and development needs

  3. Improving access to leadership and career development opportunities

  4. Demonstrating the benefits of leadership development and constant growth of capable leaders to embrace the current and future socio-economic challenges

Which are transpired in following 5 levels-

> On-ground Activation: The FLP Team meets the interested participants in their respective University campuses where the prospective participants learn first-hand about the socio-economic, technological developments happening around the globe and what opportunities those expose Bangladesh to and inspire them to lead to engage into those possibilities.

> Pre-screening: Interested applicants are invited to a carefully designed aptitude based Written Examination which tests their analytical, verbal reasoning, national & global development knowledge. Shortlisted applicants are then further invited to an Oral Assessment where the participants get the opportunity to put forward prompt analysis to given scenario based problems and showcase their inner and acquired skills.

>Task based ‘The Apprentice’ Phase: The FLP Team carefully designs tasks with particular relevance to national and economic development of Bangladesh and the short-listed participants work in ‘TEAM’ in those tasks and present their cases in front of a Jury Board with tasks/ sector relevant expertise.

Participants receive extensive task-relevant mentoring and guidance from key industry experts, professionals and institutions before commencing their tasks.

Tasks are not simulations, rather actual issues and participants are driven to address those with carefully structured processes. Participants complete each tasks in 72 hours-time with TEAM effort and learn to respect, tolerate and complement each other’s varied skills and resources. Tasks are carefully designed to incorporate the Diversity & Skills elements to foster Leadership.

> Reality Show: Teams perform their tasks under 24 hours live camera operation which captures the thoughts & actions and processes in addressing the issues. The final production is shown through TV with the intention to disseminate the learning amongst the wider audiences as much as possible. This in a way showcases the excellence of the teams’ works and aspirations of the young talented individuals transforming into leaders as drivers of socio-economic change.

The FLP be telecasted through national TV channel, leading private TV channel/s as well as In BTV and through a2i, Prime Minister’s Office network at Upazilla Digital Centres.

Winners are selected by the Experts’ judgements as the Board with carefully drawn up tasks & leadership skills correlated toolkits and also through Public opinion in TV.

> Leadership Hub: We host off the shelf and paid resources, contents on topics related to leadership, entrepreneurship in our Portal which the participants have full access to. We have developed an interactive communication tool in the portal to link our participants to Senior Management Team members from Corporate and Third Sector organisation facilitating a carefully designed Mentor-Mentee guided learning process.

In 2012-13 The FLP was for the Business students coming into the programme, and in 2014 we hosted the same for the students of Science & Technology and in 2015 we have also included the students of Social Sciences & Liberal Arts. Thus The FLP has developed the single skills platform to support its participants’ development goals despite their varied academic backgrounds.
